Biography

Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs was an American computer entrepreneur and inventor. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer.

In the late 1970s, Jobs, with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula and others designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC's mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Macintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets. Apple's subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its CEO from 1997 until 2011.

In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1 percent until its acquisition by The Walt Disney company in 2006. Consequently Jobs became Disney's largest individual shareholder at 7 percent and a member of Disney's Board of Directors. On August 24, 2011, Jobs announced his resignation from his role as Apple's CEO.

On October 5, 2011, Apple announced that Jobs had died at age 56 due to pancreatic cancer.

This hits me personally in ways I never would have expected. The most inspiring thing you did I feel, was David-ing Sculley's Goliath demonstrating the impotence of corporate power vs a small group of dedicated people. "It is hard to think that a $2 billion company with 4,300-plus people couldn't compete with six people in blue jeans." When Apple acquired NeXT for $429 million your value added became apparent to the world. Your logo continues to remind what is important, the potential of computers to destroy or redeem, and not to forget this. Conscience still matters, and technology leaders have a responsibility to remember this as they direct the true course of history. May your soul RIP and if you would, please, whisper to us from heaven, help us keep conscience in balance with technology as your legacy inspires. Nobody did it like you.

If there is one thing to say about Steve, it's that even in ill health he always seemed happy and excited about whatever next gadget Apple was coming out with. My first computer was a Apple IIgs, and my first Macintosh was the Macintosh Classic II. Now I compute from a Macintosh PowerBook G4 and a Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC. Every time I hear the Macintosh start up chime and see that smiling Mac OS logo on my older Mac, I'll think of Steve and like the Mac itself, I'll smile. You'll be missed Steve!

You were the man that brought forth a generation of exciting new technology for humanity. You changed how we listened to music with the iPod and iTunes. You changed the phone with the iPhone. You redesigned the pc by developing the iMac. You even enabled digital animation to evolve through Pixar. Last but not least you brought us iPad, a tablet computing marvel that joined the gap between laptop and smartphone. Steve Jobs, you were an inventor, a legend, and the Edison of my era. Your passing may mark the end of an era but your contributions through your devices will be forever engraved into society. The ingenuity and unwavering pursuit you possesed to develop the perfect gadget was priceless and will be sorely missed. R.I.P. Steve

One day personnel director came and told Alcorn, "We've got this weird guy here. He says he won't leave until we hire him. We either call the cops or hire him." Alcorn replied, "Bringing him in."

Jobs was bought in, "dressed in rags basically, hippie stuff. An eighteen year-old drop out of Reed College. I (Alcorn) don't know why I(Alcorn) hired him, except that he was determined to have the job and there was some spark. I(Alcorn) really saw the spark in that man, some inner energy, an attitude that he was going to get it done. And head a vision, too. You know, the definition of a visionary is 'some one with an inner vision not supported by external facts.' He(Jobs) had great ideas with out much to back them up. Except that he(Jobs) believed in them. - A Nerd, visionary, A man with attitude. Jobs was the hustler, the man with plan, the man who knew how to generate the income. MHSRIP.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Jobs' death, & am remembering his family & friends in prayer. In his short 56 years, he gave so much to make our world a better place. I'll never forget how excited I was to purchase my first computer (a Mac) back in 1989. Not only did Mr. Jobs teach us how to live; he taught us how to die. May he rest in peace.

Deeply saddened about Steve Job's passing. When my dad was diagnosed w/pancreatic cancer, I followed Steve closely and was so encouraged by his great, enduring fight. Unfortunately, my dad had a more aggressive form of this cancer and died just shy of a year after diagnosis - way too young - but thanks to you, Steve, my dad and I shared even more great moments. Using my Mac, as I finished my PhD in NYC, I was able to visit w/my dad in California via his iPad. I even put my cap and gown on for my dad since, due to the cancer, he was unable to travel to my graduation...he also met my kitten for the first time. My dad purchased the iPad specifically so he could stay in touch with his friends and family and use the internet while spending 6 to 8 hours a day in the clinical trial during his brave fight. Thank you Steve for these priceless memories! I salute you! My prayers are with you and your family.
